why birthdays are special

Posted by chuchu

Everyone looks forward to Birthdays, be it your own or your loved one’s. Birthdays are special as we get wishes from friends, family, sweethearts or loved ones.

Sending a birthday card is our way of letting our loved one know that they’re on our mind. There should be a lot of time and effort put into finding that special card. If you are working on a budget, just letting your loved one know that you were thinking of them would be great.

Sometimes it is not the monetary amount of the gift that matters. It is about the love that is shown. Give your loved one something they can remember for a lifetime. The gift of a card should represent how you feel towards your loved one. Pick a card that symbolizes the love that you have for that person. Make them feel as though the card was meant for them and them only.

We send cards to show love and affection. Cards often symbolize what we fail to physically or verbally express to others. For some, it is much easier to put their true feeling in writing.

Aside from showing our feelings, there are other reasons to send cards. Perhaps, there is a financial struggle and we do not have the funds to give the gift that we want to give. Sending a card would be a great alternative.

Ultimately, in the end we want to make our loved one feel loved. That’s the main reason why we send birthday cards. Birthday cards can never be over rated, there is always someone out there who needs to know how much someone cares for them.

A great way of buying birthday cards is to buy them on line. There are some great web sites that have a tremendous choice of birthday cards to choose from on line. Once you have chosen your card, you can have the birthday card handwritten and sent out directly to the recipient. If you want you can have the birthday card sent back to you for you to write and then give the birthday card to the person whose birthday it is.

The great thing about on line birthday card web sites is that they have a terrific choice of birthday cards to choose from. It is also so easy to see all of the different birthday cards and saves the hassle of having to go to a shop to buy a birthday card.

Some on line birthday card web sites also have different birthday cards for each age and gender. They also have funny birthday cards and sentimental birthday cards. You can even choose a gift and have it sent out at the same time as the birthday card.

special olympics

Posted by chuchu

Special Olympics is an international nonprofit organization* dedicated to empowering individuals with intellectual disabilities to become physically fit, productive and respected members of society through sports training and competition. Special Olympics offers children and adults with intellectual disabilities year-round training and competition in 30 Olympic-type summer and winter sports.

Special Olympics currently serves 2.5 million people with intellectual disabilities in more than 200 Programs in over 180 countries. Those numbers are the result of an overwhelmingly successful Campaign for Growth that began in 2000. That year, Special Olympics made a bold commitment to reach 2 million athletes by the end of 2005, while simultaneously changing attitudes about people with intellectual disabilities around the world. Over the course of those five years, in addition to providing more than 1 million more athletes the opportunity to experience the joy of sport, Special Olympics transformed itself.

Today, Special Olympics stands as a leader in the field of intellectual disability. It is a truly global movement, with more than 500,000 athletes in China, more than 210,000 in India, almost 550,000 in the United States, more than 600 in Afghanistan and 4,400 athletes in Rwanda. Special Olympics World Games were held in Ireland in 2003 and Japan in 2005 and, in 2007, China will host the World Summer Games. Most importantly, Special Olympics sharpened the focus on its mission as not just “nice,” but critical, not just as a sports organization for people with intellectual disabilities, but also as an effective catalyst for social change.

Children and adults with intellectual disabilities who participate in Special Olympics develop improved physical fitness and motor skills, greater self-confidence and a more positive self-image. They grow mentally, socially and spiritually and, through their activities, exhibit boundless courage and enthusiasm, enjoy the rewards of friendship and ultimately discover not only new abilities and talents but “their voices” as well.

halo-halo special

Posted by chuchu

Halo-halo (from Tagalog halo, “mix”) is a popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice, milk, and sugar, to which is added various sweet beans and fruits, and generally served cold in a tall glass.

There is no specific recipe for this dessert, and a wide variety of ingredients are used. Primary ingredients include red mung beans, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, sugar palm fruit (kaong), coconut sport (macapuno), and plantains. Other components may include jackfruit (langka), star apple, tapioca or sago, nata de coco, purple yam (ube) or sweet potato (kamote), sweetened corn kernels or pounded crushed rice (pinipig), flan or custard, and gelatin. Other fruits, such as papayas, avocados, kiwifruit, or cherries, may also be added.

Generally, condensed milk or evaporated milk are used instead of fresh milk, due to the tropical climate of the Philippines.

Halo halo (papaya, melon & coconut drink):

Categories: Beverages Ethnic
Yield: 1 Servings
2.00 each Tb grated coconut or makapuno preserve
2.00 each Tb papaya sheds*
½ cup Melon shreds*
2.00 each Tb langka (fresh or preserve)
1.00 each Tb ubi
1.00 each Tb kaong 2 tsp sugar
¼ cup Evaporated milk
Crushed ice

YIELD: 1 RECIPE Combine any 4 of the first 6 ingredients in a tall glass. Fill up with crushed ice. Add sugar and evaporated milk. For a special halo-halo use a bana float dish. Top halo-halo with 1 scoop ice cream and cherry. *Use ripe, firm fruits. Use macapuno scraper or grater to get shreds. Also available are ready made mixed fruits in a bottle call Halo-halo mixes, in various bottles, with beans and corn, etc. Good eating on a hot and muggy day.

Alternative
Halo-Halo Recipe

shredded/juliened melon (cantaloupe)

macapuno (sweetened
coconut meat)

scooped star apple

cubed mango make
the halo-halo a more
exotic fare due to
their seasonal availability.

beans such as black
monggo (mung beans)
and sweet garbanzos
(chick peas)
are added to the mix,
squeezing in with
broiled root crops
such as diced or
crushed camote (yam)
and/or gabi (taro).

colored gelatin
(in bright green, red
and yellow) made from
agar-agar is reminiscent
of colorful fiestas.

to further sweeten
the halo-halo,
kaong and sago (tapioca)
in syrup are used

saba bananas and
langka (jackfruit) that are
mollified in syrup can
be used as flavor
enhancers.

traditionally, a
handful
of ice (literally
speaking,
crushed ice is deftly
hand-picked and placed
into your tall glass!)
entombs the ingredients,
making halo-halo-eating
a somewhat challenging
yet fulfilling endeavor!

about an inch of
evaporated milk settles
into your long glass.

though most of us are
used to evaporated milk
in our halo-halo,
an older variation can
be used to
douse the icy treat–
buko (coconut) juice
(this I have yet to sample!).

to crown the
almost-ready concoction,
roasted pinipig (pounded
roasted rice) and ube
(yam), or leche flan
(a personal favorite!) are
placed atop the
crushed ice.

a scoop of ube
ice cream gives
us a more sumptuous
alternative.

With all the ingredients
in place, the halo-halo
is complete, inviting,
ready to be feasted on.
